Hi Fred is this part of the Fermilab?
Fred said 112 days ago:
@Willem: I think the sign is pretty amazing, myself. The position of the sign on the brick wall is...what it is. The context made clear by the steel girders and such.
This was shot at the world's first nuclear power plant, the Experimental Breeder Reactor Number 1 (EBR-1) in Arco, Idaho.

I'm kind of familiar with Fermi Lab Oppenheimer and Teller, but not with the EBR. Without that backgroud knowledge part of the impact gets lost with me. The brick wall and steel girders reminded me more of indoor sport facilities, not a nuclear lab :-)
Its funny what personal context does when looking at an image.
Fred said 112 days ago:
@Willem: I kinda figure I will get low scores; especially, for impact. I just like that the sign is only half lit up. And what were they thinking that a brick wall would help them, if there were problems with the reactor?
Willem_de_VL said 112 days ago:
Thick as a brick :-)
The half lit neon letters are great. I think this would work very well as supporting image in a photo essay on the subject. Sort of side remark for 'understanding' people. As a stand alone one it needs quite a bit of pre-knowledge to 'get it'.
Have you considered uploading it in color? It might have pulled more focus on the neon lettering instead of the more ambiguous context?
I'm curious if contributors from north america get the link to the background of this one.

Hahaaa awesome!!!

Spelled out! Quality shot but a bit too straightforward
Kolbein said 111 days ago:
This is very fitting. Was it a faulty sign? or is parts of it unlit on purpose?
Fred said 111 days ago:
Thank you, Ana, Anna, Kolbein.
@AnnaG: Yep. No beating around the bush with this one.
@Kolbein: I am pretty sure it was just a faulty sign. The caretakers of this facility seemed to very much appreciate the post-WWII/cold war era in which the researchers worked. They kept the vintage furniture the scientists used and even the magazines on the coffee table were from that era. Everything that could be safely displayed was kept authentic and true to the time.
Willem_de_VL said 111 days ago:
LOL I probably need PLUTO (from the same era) to connect me to this location. If I ever get to Chicago this is on my 'to visit' list...
Fred said 111 days ago:
@Willem: Well if you are ever in Chicago, you will want to take a left and head west for about...1539 miles (2477 km). EBR-1 is just around the corner from there. :o)

@Fred... hitch hiking can be a nice way to explore a country... Where is it? 1500 miles west must be close to the pacific...
Willem_de_VL said 111 days ago:
I was more or less cruising in this wikipedia info to guess the location http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Argonne_National_Laboratory
Fred said 111 days ago:
Nope. Try this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Experimental_Breeder_Reactor_I
Willem_de_VL said 111 days ago:
Thanks!
If it's Idaho based does it run on potatoes?
Beamer said 111 days ago:
And it looks like it glowing too!! Nice find!
MaggieMac said 110 days ago:
The parts of the sign that are lit up certainly add to the overall composition of the shot - nicely done.
ThelmaBlizzard said 109 days ago:
Great find!
kadenajack said 109 days ago:
Great interpretation. Something about the composition doesn't sit right with me. I'm not sure if it's the off kilter angle, the dead space to the right, or a combination of those things. I do like the monochrome treatment though.
Fred said 108 days ago:
Thank you, Clyde, Maggie, Thelma and Jack.
@Jack: I guess I could have framed it tighter.

I keep coming back to this for some reason. It draws me in.

Congrats Fred!
This one has been very educational!! ;-)

Congratulations, Fred!! :)

Congrats Fred:)
LBStone said 107 days ago:
I really like the retro sci-fi feel of this.
I also wonder why some of the letters are out. Is "atomic power" not enough to light the whole sign? Hah.

Congratulations, Fred!

Suits the topic. Not very high on impact or composition. Does make me curious about the relation between photographer and this lab....
